I found its constantly shifting and sliding focus disturbing and disorienting, while its presentation as a single story of what is essentially the nexus of at least four separate but interconnecting story arcs -- all of which are glimpsed only tangentially and in differing degrees of detail and none of which are taken through to any conclusion or resolution -- ultimate left me feeling somewhat empty and more than a little frustrated by the end.

I couldn't help thinking at times that the author had chosen to weave rather more threads than she could comfortably manage into the fabric of the story, leaving some of them loose and dangling in places, whilst spending a bit too long tugging at some of the others. She has a lot of good ideas but ultimately didn't seem to be too sure about how to use them all. On this showing, once she has learnt to truly harness her imagination, she will be quite a voice to be reckoned with.

Tell Me a Story: Review: Farundell by L R Fredericks

September 26, - Published on Amazon. LR Frederick's novel Farundell is a leap into a strange world populated with brave heroes from World War I, zany senior citizens, Egyptologists, and a young girl who enjoys etymologies.

Paul Asher takes on the job of typist for Percy's memoirs. This story-within-a-story takes us to the Amazon where the narrator explains his fondness for tribal life. Of course, if you're easily bored by life on an old estate in England, with its gardens and scuptures and hidden treasures, you might choose to sail to the Amazon. Love or a surreal substitute distracts Paul from his duties as memoirist and we become voyeurs of a sex-starved couple.

Humor is ever-present in the scenes of life on the manor, and the battle-weary Daniel provides some poignant moments as Alice the little etymologist looks after him in his hideout. Skeptics will not be able to make the stretch required of reality presented in this novel.

They probably would miss the surreal humor as well. You're never quite sure if something is really happening or someone is just getting all swimmy and strange. Questions about life and death abound. Is death really the end, or just the beginning of another journey somewhere in the mist? Moonbeams are frequent and could almost be called another character. In this romantic dreamworld, surreal things happen often, particularly in water. Visit eBay's page on international trade. Item location:. ThriftBooks Warehouse, United States.

Description Farundell is a story of magical awakening as a young man searches for meaning in the aftermath of the First World War, a young girl comes of age and an old man journeys through memory to death.

There's an enigmatic book, an erotic obsession, magic both black and white, a ghost who's not a ghost, a murder that's not a murder, a treasure that's not a treasure. It's about love, loss and longing; language, imagination and the nature of reality. In the golden summer of Paul Asher, still shattered by the trauma of the Western Front, comes to Farundell, an idyllic country house set deep in the Oxfordshire countryside.
